Tampa is widely regarded as the cultural center of Florida's vibrant west coast and for good reason; there are numerous established artistic centers and performance venues, two universities and a host of other schools ensuring that the arts scene in the city always stays fresh. In addition to being a popular sports venue, the USF Sun Dome regular hosts superstar acts appealing to all tastes, with everyone from the Backstreet Boys to Pavarotti having played there.

The David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) is a state-of-the-art venue, the largest of its kind in the southeast, and it regularly hosts major musical, theatrical, dance and opera productions. The best place to see a movie here in the city is at the Tampa Theater. Built in 1926, it is one of the few historic movie-houses to have survived demolition and it regularly showcases both musical acts taking advantage of the superb acoustics and charmed ambience of the venue, as well as mainstream and independent films.

Several bars and clubs offer regularly scheduled live music acts catering to the tastes of diverse audiences. Among the best in the city for lovers of jazz is the Jazz Cellar bar.
